Cold Spark Fountains: Safe Indoor Fireworks for Your First Dance

Cold sparks have become the single most requested special effect at Maltese weddings, and it is easy to understand why. Two or four machines placed around the dancefloor throw shimmering fountains of light several metres into the air, framing you during your first dance. In photographs and video they are spectacular. In person they lift the whole room.
What the machines actually are
The effect comes from Sparkular style machines, which heat a fine metal powder to produce a bright spark fountain. Crucially, the sparks are cold to the touch. There is no flame, no combustion and no smoke, which is what makes them safe to use indoors and close to guests, unlike traditional pyrotechnics.
Indoor safety
Because there is no real fire, they do not set off smoke alarms and they do not scorch. That said, we still treat them properly. We check ceiling height, keep a safe clearance from drapes and low fixtures, position the units so guests are never in the spark path and fire them by remote so the timing is exact. Our crew handles placement and operation on every job.
Which venues allow them
Most Maltese venues are happy with cold sparks, and many have hosted them many times. Some historic and heritage properties have stricter rules, so we always confirm with the venue in advance rather than assuming. If your venue does not permit them, the low fog dancing on clouds effect is a beautiful alternative and works almost anywhere.
Timing them right
The effect lasts under a minute, so where you place it matters. The most common choices are your entrance into the reception, the first dance chorus and the final song of the night.
