Getting Married in Gozo: What Changes for Music and Sound

Gozo weddings have become a much bigger part of our year, and the question we get most often is whether working on the island is somehow more complicated. For the couple, no. We deliver a Gozo wedding exactly the way we deliver one in Malta, with the same equipment, the same team and the same setup. What changes sits behind the scenes.

The ferry, and the Gozo fee

Everything we bring travels by road, which means our sound technicians, our vans and your artists all take the ferry. That is the whole reason a Gozo fee exists on your quote. It covers the ferry crossings and the additional travelling time for the team and the musicians. It is not a premium for the postcode.

We quote it up front rather than adding it later. If you are comparing suppliers, it is worth checking whether the price you have been given includes the crossing or whether it appears afterwards.

Timings run wider

The ferry does not run to your wedding schedule, so we build in more margin than we would for a Malta venue. In practice that means the team leaves earlier and arrives earlier, which is a good thing rather than an inconvenience. Equipment is set up and sound checked before guests start arriving, without exception, and the extra margin protects that.

There is no standard setup time. A smaller package takes one to two hours. Bigger packages take longer. Venues that are harder to access take longer again, and a few Gozitan venues sit down narrow lanes or up steps that affect how long the load in takes. We work that out with the venue rather than guessing on the day.

The venue conversation

Over the past ten years we have worked with venues right across Malta and Gozo, some far more often than others. Either way we contact your venue ahead of the wedding to confirm setup time, where we are positioned, and what power is available.

The one thing worth doing yourself, wherever you marry, is confirming with the venue that they know there will be a DJ and that the volume you want is allowed. It is a two minute conversation that prevents the most frustrating problem at a wedding, which is being asked to turn the music down halfway through the party over something nobody raised in advance.

Ceremony music

If the ceremony is in a Gozitan church, the same considerations apply as in Malta. We provide a violinist and singer, piano and violin, or singer and guitarist, and the repertoire needs to suit the church. Parishes vary in what they will allow, so tell us your key pieces early and we will check.

If you are having the ceremony at the venue itself, which is more common for destination weddings, we set up one or two speakers, a wireless microphone, a mixer and the music, and the restrictions largely disappear.

The party, and the after party

Gozo does not change the shape of the night. The reception runs its usual five hours or so, the first dance sits around the halfway point, lighting stays white and elegant before it and turns into party lighting after. Most couples carry on with an after party indoors after eleven.

Cold sparklers, low fog for the first dance, uplighting and a saxophonist over the DJ set all travel perfectly well across the channel. Nothing in our range is off the table because you are on the other island.

If you are planning from abroad

A large share of Gozo weddings are destination weddings, and most of those couples are planning from the UK, Ireland or elsewhere in Europe. We speak to couples before they book to answer questions, then come back around one and a half to two months before the date to go through the day properly.

If you cannot visit the island, we would strongly suggest engaging a local wedding planner. We are happy to liaise with the planner, with you, or with both. Either way a member of our team is on site through the whole day.
