Why Corporate Events Are Judged on Speech Audio, Not Music

At a wedding, the music is the entertainment. At a corporate event, the music is the backdrop and the spoken word is the content. Your guests came to hear the results, the awards, the launch or the thank you. Which means the part of the AV setup that carries the most risk is also the part most often treated as an afterthought: microphones.

Where speech audio actually fails

In our experience, corporate speech problems come from a small and very predictable set of causes. Flat batteries in a wireless handheld halfway through a long awards list. Feedback because a microphone was carried in front of a speaker. Levels set for a confident speaker and then handed to a quiet one. A presenter walking outside the receiver range. And the simplest of all, a microphone that was never switched on because nobody was watching the desk.

Every one of those is preventable. None of them are preventable if the equipment is dropped off and left unattended.

What a proper speech setup looks like

For any event with speeches we plan a dedicated setup rather than borrowing the party system. That means enough wireless microphones for the speakers, a spare handheld live and on standby at all times, fresh batteries in every unit for every event, a corded backup microphone within reach, and a technician at the desk through the spoken sections riding levels for each voice.

The handover rehearsal

Awards nights live and die on microphone handovers. We rehearse it before doors: who holds the microphone, who passes it, where the winner stands, and what happens if someone brings their own notes and needs both hands. Five minutes of rehearsal removes the most common awkward moment at corporate events.

Presentations and video playback

If anyone is presenting from slides or playing a video, the audio needs to come through the main system at a level matched to the speech, not blasting or barely audible. We test every video file in advance rather than discovering a format problem in front of your audience.

Rooms and reverberation

Large hard surfaced rooms, which describes many of Malta’s most impressive venues, blur speech if the system is not set up for it. The fix is coverage and placement rather than volume. Turning it up in a reverberant room makes intelligibility worse, not better, and this is exactly where professional experience shows.
