The Wedding Afterparty: Keeping the Dance Floor Alive

There is a moment at most weddings, usually somewhere after midnight, when the older guests have gone home and what remains is your closest friends with no intention of stopping. This is the afterparty, and it is often the part couples remember most vividly. It also needs a different approach from the main reception.

What changes after midnight

The crowd is smaller, younger and more committed. You no longer need to cater for everyone from grandparents to children, which means the music can get bolder, deeper and louder. This is where house music comes into its own, and where our DJs genuinely enjoy themselves. The set stops being about pleasing every table and becomes about the floor in front of you.

A second location

Many venues require outdoor music to stop at a set time but allow it to continue indoors. Moving the afterparty to a second room is the cleanest solution, and the key is having a full second setup already installed there. If equipment has to be carried and rebuilt, you lose half an hour and all the momentum. A dedicated afterparty rig means guests simply walk from one space into another and the night carries on.

Sound and lighting for a smaller room

Afterparty spaces are usually more intimate, which changes the setup. You want punchy sound with real low end rather than wide coverage, and lighting that makes a small room feel like a club: moving heads, a haze machine so the beams read, and no bright ambient light. A CO2 gun on the drop is a favourite here and always gets a reaction.

How long to book

Most afterparties run two hours, which is usually the natural life of the room. Our extra hours are charged by the hour and can be decided on the night, so if the floor is still full you can simply extend rather than having to guess months in advance.
